The criteria was to create a film character for a hypothetical ‘Star Wars’ production. This is my interpretation of a guard dog from the dark side. My initial inspiration was taken from a Doberman dog, where I sketched up lots of ideas. Some of them shown below.
Choosing the top left drawing as the idea that I would progress with, I then produced a more detailed sketch before airbrushing over the top. Having only sculpted a couple of times before, I started to sculpt in clay the life size Dobermans head. Once I had done this I then started to make the sculpture more in keeping with my concept making it look more aggressive.
I then made a 3 part mould in Plaster of Paris so that I could make a mould of the sculpture. Once this was finished, I sculpted the armour onto the head. I made a 2 part mould of the armour out of fibreglass. The painting was done in cellulose paints where I used an airbrush to get the desired effect.
